The ultimate destination for wandering backpackers, hippies, weekenders, families, travel bloggers and influencers — Tulum is for everyone. I’ve been visiting since I was a child, and despite my countless trips to and extensive exploration of this paradise, I always find a reason to return. Situated on the stunning Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Tulum’s strategic location in the Mayan Riviera renders it a truly incredible destination with an endless list of activities and must-see spots. This list is meant to serve as a baseline for an authentic Tulum-Mayan Riviera experience, and is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to adventuring in this very special place. To know before you go: The closest airport to Tulum is Cancun (CUN) Airport. Numerous operators now have direct flights to Cancun from major cities around the world, making travel to this beautiful region even easier! From CUN Airport, Tulum is about a 2-hour drive. You can rent a car, take a shuttle or public bus, or go by private taxi. All transport is easy to arrange directly at the airport. Where you stay in Tulum matters. The main town is about 6KM from the beach road, and is a lively mix of bars and cafés, street vendors and nightlife. The beachfront boasts boutique and luxury hotels, villas and private homes, glamping and DIY campgrounds, and trendy restaurants and exclusive clubs. Staying in the town is significantly more affordable, and most places offer bikes for rent making it easy to get from town-to-beach or beach-to-town. Taxis are also safe, secure, and plentiful.
