Louvre Museum
Somewhere in the world there must exist the unthinkable, a pitiful human being who does not like art. But even that deprived (depraved?) soul has certainly at least heard of the Louvre. Its place of superlatives, both the world’s biggest art museum and the most visited, with over 38,000 objects on display and an almost uncountable number more in their archives. Many visitors head straight for the Louvre’s most celebrated work, the iconic “Mona Lisa”. But the piece that most strongly resonated with me was the imposing, glorious “Winged Victory of Samothrace”. This massive marble conveys a sense of movement unlike any other sculpture you’ve ever seen. It’s also got a riveting history. in particular you may want to read up on its nerve-wracking removal for safe keeping during WWII or follow the current controversy about its possible repatriation to Greece.
