Auckland could just as easily be dubbed the "city of lava" for the 48 volcanoes that are dotted around its landscape. Though some have been quarried away owing to rapid urbanization, many volcanic cones still punctuate the skyline. These volcanic cones provided natural defense against intruders in the past. Mount Eden is highest of Auckland’s mainland volcanoes. Climb or cycle upto its summit and stare into the vastness of its 50 meter deep crater. The crater today is lush green but it is thought-provoking to imagine the spectacle when lava had once gushed out of here. It is strictly prohibited to cycle in the crater.
