Church of St. Louis of the French
This church, around the corner from Piazza Navona, is home to three spectacular canvases by (IMHO) the greatest of the old masters. Caravaggio’s “The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew” is shockingly dramatic, realistic and aggressive and the most popular and arguably the best of the trio, although the other two are also undeniable masterpieces. These works contributed greatly to his fame and reputation as a painter of religious art despite Caravaggio’s troubled, violent and generally amoral personal life.
